What is SmartControl and How Does It Work?
How Qvantum's dynamic price optimisation adjusts your heat pump automatically
SmartControl: smart energy management for your heat pump
SmartControl is Qvantum's intelligent control strategy that automatically adjusts your heat pump's operation based on electricity prices. It helps you reduce costs while maintaining comfort — without any manual intervention.
How it works
SmartControl receives electricity price data 24 hours in advance. It then plans the heat pump's operation to:
- Run more during cheap electricity hours (building up heat in the building and hot water tank)
- Run less during expensive peak hours (using the stored heat)
This approach — called thermal buffering — can significantly reduce your energy bill without affecting comfort.
The three modes
Eco
Maximum savings. The heat pump aggressively shifts operation to cheap hours. Temperature may fluctuate slightly more. Best for households with a dynamic energy contract who want to maximise savings.
Balanced
The best of both worlds. The heat pump still reacts to price signals, but with smaller swings. This is the recommended default for most households.
Comfort
Comfort is prioritised. SmartControl still considers prices but less aggressively. The temperature is kept as stable as possible while still capturing some savings.
Requirements
- A dynamic electricity contract (hourly or day-ahead pricing)
- SmartControl enabled in the Qvantum app
Does SmartControl work with solar panels?
Currently, SmartControl optimises based on grid electricity prices only — it does not yet read your solar panel production. Integration with home energy management systems (HEMS) is on our roadmap.
