Can I Connect My Heat Pump to Solar Panels?
Current solar integration options and what's coming in the roadmap
Using your Qvantum heat pump with solar panels
Many Qvantum customers have solar panels and want their heat pump to run when they're generating free electricity. Here's the current status and what's on the roadmap.
Current situation
Right now, SmartControl optimises your heat pump based on grid electricity prices — it does not yet read your solar panel production directly. This means the heat pump doesn't automatically "know" when you're generating surplus solar power.
Workarounds today
Option A: Manual scheduling
If your solar panels typically produce well between 10:00 and 15:00, you can create a hot water boost schedule in the app for those hours. This is a simple way to take advantage of your own production without any integration.
Option B: Modbus TCP/IP (for advanced users)
Qvantum heat pumps support Modbus TCP/IP communication. If your home energy management system (HEMS) or solar inverter supports Modbus, it can send control signals to the heat pump to increase its output when solar surplus is detected. This requires technical configuration — see the article on Modbus integration.
What's coming
Qvantum is developing a Cloud API and expanded local control options to allow full integration with home energy management systems (HEMS). The goal is for SmartControl to react not only to grid prices but also to real-time solar production from your own roof.
